Tiny Solar House Visits Colorado - Part 2

When we left Black Canyon National Park we headed toward Telluride, but without any RV parks nearby we were forced to find an alternative place to park. Lucky for us we stumbled upon Weber RV Park and it's new owner Sam who turned out to be both a great host and a tiny house enthusiast! Weber's is located in Ridgway, CO which is between Ouray and Telluride and turned out to be a really, really great spot for us.

We initially planned to stay in Ridgway for around 1 week, mainly hiking and checking out Telluride, but after discovering the free concerts in Ridgway's local park each week, the refreshing beer at Colorado Boy Brewery, and the delicious food at Taco del Gnar, our stay quickly turned into a 3 week discovery!

Ouray is an old mining town in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. Because of its beautiful mountainous surroundings, the town has been given the nickname "Switzerland of America."

Many people vacation in Ouray because of its vast network of ATV and off-road vehicle trails. During our stay in nearby Ridgway we saw a huge gathering of Toyota FJ Cruisers, evidently an annual meetup to ride Ouray's trails together.

We had so much fun staying in Ridgway that we only took 1 day trip to Telluride. It had a nice downtown with lots of shopping and restaurants, a series of waterfall hikes, an incredible brewery, and a free gondola (aerial shuttle) to the nearby town of Mountain Village.

After enjoying our time in Ridgway, we then headed up to Meeker, Colorado to stay a few days with family and friends. Meeker is a small town know for its fly-fishing and lush nature.

Theodore Roosevelt once visited the town on a mountain lion hunting trip and stayed in the historic Hotel Meeker opposite the courthouse. The town is also a favorite summer destination and permanent residence for many prominent Americans, including billionaire Henry Kravis, former President and COO of Goldman Sachs Jon Winkelried, and comedian Daniel Tosh (according to Wikipedia).

While in Meeker we took a day trip about 1 hour away to Rifle State Park. While there we enjoyed an easy hike around the perimeter of the park, along with spectacular caves and even better waterfalls.

We also took a day trip to Glenwood Canyon to visit Hanging Lake, one of the most popular hiking destinations in Colorado. The hike takes you up to a beautiful aqua blue lake with a series of waterfalls, and continuing to climb even further will lead you to another breathtaking falls.

After about a week in Meeker we headed east towards Fort Collins to check out the local beer scene and bike culture. We ended up staying at an RV Park in Loveland, Colorado to make it easy for friends in Denver to meet us in Fort Collins.

Turns out the owner of the RV park where we stayed in Loveland was a tiny house enthusiast as well. River View RV Park offers a number of tiny house and park model rentals, and he and his wife are in the process of having a custom tiny house built for retirement!

During our final week in Colorado we took a trip over to Rocky Mountain National Park which was our 3rd visit to a NP. Though we did not stay there with the tiny house, it was definitely worth the trip and highly recommended. The park climbs nearly 14,000 feet and features tons of wildlife and amazing views!

After spending nearly 2 months in Colorado, we've traveled over 3,200 miles! We are 13.5 weeks into our solar powered journey across America and we still have not needed to plug into the grid for any electricity. Living off the grid supported by an off-grid solar panel kit for nearly 100 days!
